World Blog Day 2025: Is the Vlog Era the New Kingdom of the Blog?

Hey everyone! August 31st is World Blog Day. But in 2025, let's ask a crucial question: who still reads a traditional blog? Let's be honest: the digital landscape has radically changed. Today, video is undoubtedly king. The vlog has not only taken over but has also redefined how we share our stories, consume information, and connect with the world. Let's dive into the evolution of this online sharing revolution.

From 1994 to 2025: The Silent Revolution of the Blog

World blog Day - Mac

A little necessary flashback. In 1994, a student named Justin Hall created what history would remember as the very first blog. Imagine: back then, it was simply a personal online journal, a digital curiosity.

Since then, the revolution has been lightning-fast.

Blogs exploded, diversifying into countless niches: text, photography, comics, recipes, reviews... They became rich and varied spaces for expression.

Today, their number is estimated at over 600 million worldwide. A monstrous figure that testifies to the profound impact of this content form.

The Golden Age of the Vlog: Why Video Changed Everything

But a natural evolution was inevitable. The legitimate successor to the text blog? The vlog (video blog). Why this massive shift?

  • Immersion: Video is alive, immediate, and immersive. It captures tones, emotions, and atmospheres that text alone can't always convey.

  • Accessibility: No need to be an expert writer or seasoned journalist. With a smartphone and a story to tell, anyone can become a content creator.

  • Interactivity: On platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram Reels, communities form, comment, and share at a crazy pace, creating a constant dialogue.

The vlog has become the preferred format for sharing daily life, travels, passions, and opinions with millions of people.

World blog Day: The Vlog Explosion in Africa

This global phenomenon has a particular and powerful resonance on the African continent. If blogging was initially an opinion space for a connected elite, vlogging has democratized at an impressive speed. It is much more than an entertainment tool; it has become a powerful instrument for information, education, and even activism. African creators are using this format to address all topics, break taboos, and reach huge communities.

A few compelling examples (to be updated):

  • @charityekezie who works brilliantly to deconstruct prejudices about Africa and its diaspora.

  • @aprokodoctor who democratizes access to health and wellness information from Lagos.

They talk about fashion, music, politics, lifestyle... unfiltered and with an authenticity that resonates deeply.

Le Règne du Vlog n'est pas Sans Responsabilité

With great power comes great responsibility. The democratization of video creation poses a major challenge: disinformation. Without traditional gatekeepers (editors-in-chief, fact-checkers), some broadcasters, sometimes voluntarily, share false or misleading information with a very wide audience.

This new era imposes a dual responsibility on all of us:

  • As creators: Our duty is to check our sources, be honest, transparent, and cultivate integrity.

  • As the public: We must activate our critical thinking, cross-reference our sources, and not take all information at face value.

Blog or Vlog, the Spirit of Sharing Remains the Same

So, is the blog dead? No. It has transformed. In 2025, the vlog dominates through its format and reach, but the spirit of the blog remains intact. Whether written or filmed, the heart of this practice remains the same: to tell stories, inform, inspire, and connect people.

So, happy World Blog Day 2025! And now, over to you: are you Team Blog  or Team Vlog ? Tell me in the comments!
